It was a beautiful day to work on the bike. It needed it bad. I hosed it off and as soon as the tire patch got wet it failed and the tube poked back out.
Anyway, I built up the new rims. Easton two's with a PG990 cassette. They're not tubless. They are a big step up from the Rangers I've been running. Stiffer rims and sealed cartridge bearings. New tires and tubes.
I also noticed that I carved up the bash guards I taped on the carbon seat stays when I crashed. So, I'm glad I put them on. I put on new tape and good to go.
I also fixed the loose headset. Thanks for telling me how Brad, it worked perfect!
I hit the rr derailuer in the same crash. It needed some adjustment and I can't tell if its bent or not. Seems to be working but the heavy gears not so well.
New chain too. The stock one had a year of Michaux so it was time.
I'll bring it out Tuesday and see how it goes.

Good deal! I owe Rob his tire back, so I won't be riding the Slayer this week. I need to go to the lbs and pick up the Aizan, so thats what I'll be riding. This will be another week of tweaking. I should have my new tire by the end of the week. I get my laptop back Tuesday so maybe then I can post some fancy pics too! Glad to see you got all your mechanicals ironed out.
ReplyDeleteWhen you say you built up the wheels are you lacing the spokes too? I'll have to be impressed if so. That seems like a bit of a black art to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm torn what to do about my rear tire. I could swap the original Maxxis tires around and go tubeless again or just stick with tubes. Cutting the sidewall on the second ride has me soured on tubeless. I did really like the way that rear tire hooked up with lower pressures though. We'll see. I'll probably try tubeless again.
I bought laced wheels and put the cassette, rotors and tread on them. I've never built wheels from the spokes up. I wouldn't consider it unless I really knew the art and the components. It would still cost more than I spent on this set ($380)
ReplyDeleteThat really sucks about the tire. I'm beginning to ride right over stuff and not try to shoot those little tracks in between the rocks. I think those are the sidewall culprits. My rear tire always looks like it went to war but the front wheel seems to fair better.
I do like tubeless. I'm running my tubeless setup for the race. They have a low knob and roll fast.
The new mud knobs I got are just too slow, but they get great traction. I'll save them for the rainy days when its sloppy.
